ON THE MOVE
Think beyond the monthly repayment.
Whether you're replacing the family car or buying something for a different stage of life, tell Sam what you're considering. The conversation can cover the purchase, intended use and questions you want answered before arranging finance.
Compare quotes on the same basis
- Use the same vehicle price, deposit and amount financed.
- Check the loan term, repayment frequency and all fees.
- Compare the balloon or final payment and total repayments, including fees and that final amount.
A lower instalment may reflect a longer term or a larger balloon, rather than a cheaper loan. Ask what you will pay overall and how you would cover any final amount.
For an independent checklist, see Moneysmart’s guide to car loans.
What Sam can help you work through
- Discuss a new or used vehicle and your purchase timing.
- Ask about the proposed term, fees and total repayments.
- Clarify whether a final or balloon payment is part of any option discussed.
YOUR QUESTIONS
Before we talk.
Do I need to have chosen a car?
No. An approximate budget and the kind of vehicle you're considering are enough to start a conversation.
Can I enquire about a used car?
Yes. Share the vehicle details when you have them. Sam can explain what information needs to be assessed.
What should I ask about a balloon payment?
A balloon payment is a final lump sum due at the end of some car loans. Ask how much it is, when it is due and how it affects the total cost. Plan how you would repay it before choosing that option.
What should I compare before choosing car finance?
Look at the total repayments, fees, loan term and any final balloon payment, not only the weekly or monthly amount. Ask about security and any restrictions or fees for extra repayments or paying the loan out early.
What information helps start a car-finance enquiry?
Tell Sam whether the car is new or used, its approximate price and when you hope to buy. If you have already found one, a short description is enough to begin. Do not put identification, account details or documents in this form.
